Zonolite Removal
Zonolite was a common brand-name of vermiculite insulation found in thousands of homes throughout the United States. It contained minerals originating from the Libby Mine in Libby, Montana, which was the largest and oldest vermiculite mine in the United States. While the mine was active, they may have produced up to 80% of the world’s vermiculite insulation.
Zonolite and vermiculite from the Libby Mine contained asbestos and other harmful minerals. Though the mine operators knew that the product was harmful, they failed to inform their employees, residents of Libby, and their customers of the dangers of the product.
There is now a Trust Fund called the Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust Fund set up for homeowners in the United States who have Zonolite insulation in their homes. The Trust Fund compensates homeowners for part of the Zonolite removal and part of the re-insulation cost.
